Bariloche is a city in the province of Río Negro, situated on the foothills of the Andes in Patagonia, surrounded by many lakes and mountains. It is famous for skiing but also great for sight-seeing, water sports, trekking and climbing. Cerro Catedral is one of the most important ski centers in South America.
Known as the little Switzerland of Argentina, the city of Bariloche lies in a valley that enjoys the reputation of having the best and largest ski resorts, including Cerro Capital — one of the most important resorts in South America. Bariloche, an alpine city, has a population of 93,000 inhabitants. Bariloche is the biggest city of a huge Lakes District, and serves as a base for many excursions in the region.
Trekking in the mountains, almost completely wild and uninhabited with the exception of a few high-mountain huts, is also a popular activity. The city is also famous for its chocolates. Additionally, the region is home to indigenous communities which still preserve their language and culture.
Students enjoy guided visits to the Patagonia Museum, ice skating in front of the Nahuel Huapi lake, tango classes and alpine sledging. On Friday nights, gatherings at a local pub kick off the weekend and are a great opportunity to meet locals. If you are a sporty type, trekking, rappel, horseback riding, rafting and diving are also available. In winter this city is a must for skiers coming from all over the globe.
Bariloche is in a continental cold weather zone with a dry season. Average temperatures range from 2º C (36º F) in the winter to 16º C (61º F) in the summer. Beware, there is a considerable change in temperature between day and night.
